This is a story I heard a long while ago about a family who lived in London during the bombings of the city in WW2. The family were Christians who loved God and taught their children to sing a song about the love and care of God had for them. When the air raid sirens would scream their alerts of the approaching German bombers, the little family would make their way down to the bomb shelter, the children were comforted by singing a chorus from the song, “Safe am I, safe am I, in the hollow of His hand, safe am I.” (1) One night the bombers came in swiftly, and the little family was on the way to the fallout shelter when the bomb hit there building. Later after the bombing had stopped the all-clear siren sounded and the search and rescue team started combing the shelled building for survivors. The team found no one alive and was headed out the door, when one of the men heard little voices singing, “Safe am I, safe am I, in the hollow of His hand, safe am I.” (1) The rescuers followed the singing to find two little girls huddled together safe in a little pocket under the building debris and were able to pull them out to safety. Their parents were not found but the girls went on to tell the rescue team that their parents loved Jesus and taught them the song they had sung all night, “Safe am I, safe am I, in the hollow of His hand, safe am I.” (1)(2)
God promises in His Word that loves us and protects us and shelters us with His wings.
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. 9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” (Psalm 91)
God loves and protects us, and we will not fear any evil, any demonic force or even the future because we are to be in awe of Jesus Christ who is so much bigger than any darkness we may ever encounter.
The Bible writes and even declares, “Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” (Exodus 15:11)
There is none who stands beside our God, not only do we not fear evil, but our God makes a banquet table for us in front of our enemies, and we are comforted and fed by the Great Shepherd of the universe.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” (Psalm 23)
God loves and protects us His sheep, His children. If we are His sheep then Jesus knows us, and we have a personal relationship with Him, then we have a personal relationship with God the Father because Jesus and Father God are one. The good news is an intimate relationship with Almighty God, and because He loves us, we are sheltered in the hand of God.
“But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and my Father are one.” (John 10:26-30)
In times of trouble or danger, I love to retell the story about the two children who were spared from death and the story of their miraculous rescue. My children and I always finish the story by singing, “Safe am I, Safe am I, in the hollow of God’s hand, safe am I.” One night we were driving home from a family outing when the weather changed to freezing rain. Traffic slowed to a snail pace and the road crews could not keep up with the ice on the roads from the heavily falling rain. I do what I always do in times of trouble I went to my Savior and began to pray for safety, and I began to sing, “Safe am I, safe am I, in the hollow of His hand safe am I.” As I sang my children joined in with me when suddenly several yards in front of us there was a multi-car pileup due to black ice. There was nothing I could do, there was no time to stop before our car careened into the wrecks ahead of us. As we hit the ice, our car spun out of control and started to flip and went up in the air on two wheels in my terror I called out, Jesus. Miraculously, our car jolted back on the road, and I was able to steer around the wrecks. With tears of thankfulness dripping down my face, I held tightly onto the wheel as we sang, “Safe am I.” It was divine intervention from God, my protector that enabled me to steer to the side of the road away from the accidents in front of me, and the only way we did not crash or flip over, was the mighty hand of God. Praise God He is our protector. God is not only my protector, but He is your protector as well. Call on Him with your prayers for He loves you so.
God loves you, God hears you, and He protects you. The Bible boldly states in Psalm 91, that no evil will come upon you and nothing; nothing will come near your dwelling. God who loves you is a personal God and Psalm 23, states our Lord is the great Shepherd who protects His sheep. Jesus is the Faithful Shepherd WHO PROTECTS YOU with His rod and staff.
Take a moment and enjoy the realization that God Almighty, the Maker of the universe, the Creator of all things, loves you, and because He loves you, He protects you because you are special to Him. When you are feeling overwhelmed by life remember He sent His son to redeem you to Himself; specially created by His own hand, one of a kind you. 13 “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:13-16)
He loves you unconditionally and when your life is filled with troubles, and trials and feels out of control, He hears you. Psalm 91:15 says, “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him.” If you bear the name of Jesus Christ, God hears you and protects you. He has promised in His word to protect you.
The mighty arm of God Almighty protects you, the same God that parted the red sea, that protected the Israelites in the desert protects you. He is waiting to hear from you, call upon Him. Our God is a pillar of fire by night and is a pillar of cloud by day. (Exodus 13:31)
Join with me in prayer. Jesus, we call upon you, life is so hard, protect us. Our lives are in rubble we need you. We call upon you, Oh Holy One of Israel hear our pleas. He hears our prayers, He sees our needs and comforts us. The God of Israel never sleeps nor slumbers. He is a 24-hour God. “Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” (Psalms 121:4)
Fear not for He is Elohei ma’uzzi, God our strength, when we are weak; He is strong. “9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9,10)
There is nothing too big for Him, He is interested in you. Raise your voice and your arms to heaven and call on Him, call out to Him, Jesus save me, I need you; Hear my prayer, oh Lord.
Our God who sits upon the throne of Heaven loves and cares for you. He knows when a sparrow falls. There is not thing too small for God to care about because He cares for you, His beloved. “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-31)
Lift your voice to the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords King Jesus of Nazareth, who stands in your defense. Protect us. Keep us in the hollow of Your hand.
God hears us and delivers us. DELIVER US, Oh God our Savior.
Jesus, we call on you and come to you with the burdens and cares of our life. We need you and cry out Deliverer deliver us.
Christ who is our strength, our protector, our Good Shepherd we call on you. Our God is listening and hears our cries. The Bible tells us over and over that Jesus Christ is waiting to deliver you. He hears you and delivers you because He loves you. Remember, “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him.” (Psalm 91:14)
